Our drones may not fly in space – but what happens there is incredibly exciting for the HDCC.

At „Hessen in Space“, an event organised by the Hessian State Chancellery on 22 October in Frankfurt, the Hessian Drone Competence Centre (HDCC) at Kassel Airport, part of TU Darmstadt, was represented by Michèle Knodt, Director of the HDCC and Professor of Political Science at TU Darmstadt, Björn Scheuermann, Professor at the HDCC and Head of the Multimedia Communications/Communication Networks Labs at TU Darmstadt, and Dorota Iwaszczuk, Professor at the HDCC and Head of the Remote Sensing and Image Analysis Group at TU Darmstadt.

Security, autonomy and resilience, space-based weather and climate monitoring, and the protection of critical infrastructure: the programme offered plenty of material to help participants look beyond their own research horizons.

The HDCC was particularly interested in the link between satellites and drones: how can the two work together to ensure communication even under difficult conditions and provide reliable situational awareness? What opportunities does this open up for civil protection and the protection of critical infrastructure?

The HDCC representatives used the day to learn more, engage in dialogue with key figures in the space sector and gather ideas for potential collaborations. „It is precisely these kinds of encounters that make new connections possible – between technologies and between people,“ said Michèle Knodt.
