From 27 to 28 August, the Hessian Drone Competence Centre (HDKZ) joined forces with Kassel Airport to showcase its work at the Drone Days event held at Oldenburg-Hatten Airfield. The main aim was to demonstrate the opportunities that the HDKZ at Kassel Airport offers to businesses, public authorities and research institutions.

At the three-day networking event held from 26 to 28 August in Bremen and Oldenburg, representatives from business, academia, politics and public administration discussed the future of unmanned aviation. On the second day, Michèle Knodt, Director of the HDKZ and Professor of Political Science at Darmstadt Technical University, gave a presentation to the participants outlining the HDKZ’s approach and plans.

At the stand on days two and three, she, together with Lukas Biesalski, a research assistant at the HDKZ and the Institute for Flight Systems and Control Engineering (FSR) at TU Darmstadt, Benedikt Schorr, a student assistant at the FSR, and Vanessa Klos, executive assistant at Kassel Airport, provided an insight into the Drone Competence Centre and the collaboration opportunities available to local companies and the drone community: from access to research, through the real-world laboratory and the training centre, to the innovation ecosystem at the Kassel-Calden site.

There is considerable interest in partnerships and trials

„We have had many fruitful discussions with companies, research institutions, public authorities and other stakeholders in the UAS community, strengthened existing contacts and forged numerous new ones,“ the director summarises. Lukas Biesalski adds: „Above all, there was a great deal of interest in collaborations and in testing our own products.“

The HDKZ team also found the first-hand insight into the latest technological developments and applications fascinating, including numerous options for drone detection. It was also a good opportunity for exchange and networking. For example, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) presented the ‘Reallabore & Testzentren’ networking initiative run by the DLR Aviation Research Project Management Office, aimed at strengthening the network of test centres within the rebranded aviation sector.
