Drones have long been an integral part of the geoinformation sector. However, until now there has been a lack of guidance on professional data collection using drones and their application in geoinformation systems. At INTERGEO, the leading international trade fair for geodesy, geoinformation and land management, Dorota Iwaszczuk, President of the German Society for Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation (DGPF), presented the new guide „UAS and GIS“ to Sebastian Wüste, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, on 15 September 2026 on behalf of the three geoinformation associations.
The guide produced by the three geoscience associations (Runder Tisch GIS e.V., DGPF and DVW e.V. – Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management) provides fundamental knowledge, describes typical workflows and highlights practical areas of application throughout the entire process chain – from data collection and analysis through to the integration of results into GIS applications.
Relies on political support
„The geospatial sector, as an economic and strategic growth market, relies on political support. This involves both the legal framework and financial support for research activities and pilot projects,“ emphasised Dorota Iwaszczuk, who is also a professor at the Hessian Drone Competence Centre (HDCC) at Technical University of Darmstadt. „Drones should also be perceived by the general public as a useful tool rather than merely a threat.“
At the DGPF stand in the INTERGEO Geo-Associations Park, she also spoke with interested visitors about the HDCC, calibration fields for drone sensors, the testing of drones in live operations, and innovations in the fields of mapping, surveying and AI. Among others, she spoke with Anja Hopfstock from the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) and Jakob Unger from the Lower Saxony State Office for Geoinformation and Surveying.
